At St Mary and St Michael School we believe that Physical Education is a unique subject which plays a fundamental role in a child’s development. Physical Education (PE) can inspire and challenge an individual and provide opportunities for children to build character through their success and failures. We understand that PE can produce many desired outcomes and can contribute to positive physical and mental wellbeing. We want our children to be resilient, fair and compassionate individuals who recognise their achievements and always strive for their personal best. We understand that a progressive and balanced PE curriculum can develop healthy, active individuals who enjoy competing, collaborating and communicating with others.

At St Mary and St Michael we want our children to flourish in PE and sport and therefore aim to:

–       Develop pupils who are competent and confident to excel in a broad range of activities

–       Engage all children in competitive sports and activities within lessons and beyond

–       Promote creativity and leadership skills and recognise and celebrate all achievements

–       Grow passionate and healthy individuals who develop a lifelong love for physical activity

All children at key stage one and two participate in two lessons of PE each week. We have designed our curriculum so that children experience a broad range of activities that are stimulating, engaging and progressive. The focus at key stage one is on the development of fundamental skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching in additional to developing agility, balance and coordination. Children in key stage two will build upon these skills and apply them to specific sporting activities and be able to confidently evaluate their own performance. Children attend school in their PE kit on specified days and kit must adhere to the school uniform policy. We provide ample opportunities for children to compete for their self, their house and their school through personal best challenges during lessons, after school and at inter-school events.

Our passion for PE was recognised in 2014/15 by being the first school in Tower Hamlets to receive a Sainsbury School Games Gold Award. Since then we have continued to improve and in 2019/20 was awarded the Platinum award in recognition of our commitment to PE and sport. We have worked closely with the Tower Hamlets School Sport Network to help raise the profile of PE within Tower Hamlets primary schools.
